New York · for the defense

Defender's Toolbox

Discovery, deadlines and disclosure, kept from the facts you confirm.

Open a matter and upload the prosecution's discovery. Defender's Toolbox indexes every file on your own computer, reconciles it against the People's certificate of compliance, calculates the defense deadlines from a versioned rules registry, and keeps your journal, conferrals and disclosures in one place, for you to review and act on.

For New York criminal defense counsel: retained, assigned and institutional.

Defender's Toolbox deadlines for a sample case, each with its statute, rule version and confirmation status

Deadlines for a sample case. Each shows its statute, that its text was checked, and how it was calculated.

Every deadline shows its work

Each date names its statute, its trigger, the rule version and the arithmetic. A missing trigger gets "needs confirmation", never a guess.

Discovery, reconciled

The People's certificate of compliance is checked against what you actually received, item by item.

Private stays private

Client communications and work product can't be selected for any disclosure or filing export.

Encrypted on your computer

Case records are encrypted at rest. Backups are encrypted with a passphrase only you know.

What it does

Everything in Defender's Toolbox

Discovery

  • Upload ZIPs (nested ones too), folders, PDFs, pictures, Word files, emails and recordings
  • An evidence index of every file with its batch, hash, path, pages and status, kept exactly as delivered
  • Duplicates and changed versions of earlier files are recognized and recorded
  • Reconciliation against the People's certificate of compliance: received, referenced but not located, or untracked

Deadlines

  • One deadline engine reading one versioned New York rules registry
  • Every rule read against the official statute text, which you can open beside the date
  • Document, filing, arraignment, receipt and service dates kept as separate facts, each with its source
  • Calendar files for Outlook, a Today page, and the week's court dates and tasks

Conferrals and documents

  • Discovery gaps tracked, and good-faith conferrals logged as they actually happen
  • The CPL 245.50 affirmation and defense certificate assembled only from logged events, with anything unconfirmed highlighted
  • Notice of appearance, conferral letters, the defense COC and the disclosure index
  • Each document is versioned and flagged as out of date when facts change; signed or served versions are frozen

Defense evidence and reciprocal discovery

  • Defense evidence kept apart from client communications and attorney work product (CPL 245.65)
  • A reciprocal disclosure ledger and the defense chain of custody
  • Every export shows a manifest before you approve it, and a missing attachment blocks approval

Your practice

  • A case journal with dated notes, Last appearance / Next steps, and tasks
  • Search across every case
  • Conflict checks at intake, inside a case, and for a prospective client
  • Time and expense records for assigned-counsel vouchers or client bills, at your own rates

Bryce Bot (optional AI)

  • Reads and proposes, and you apply. It never sets a date, a deadline or a disclosure
  • Quotes saved statute text and refuses to cite a section that isn't saved
  • Runs only on your firm's own Amazon Bedrock, when your firm connects it and you ask
  • Treats discovery as evidence, never as instructions

New York law

Built on the statutes you practice under.

Rules come from the official text of New York's statutes. Calculated dates are for attorney review: the text says what the statute says, and how a court applies it stays your call.

CPL 245.10 and 245.20
The People's discovery obligations and timing
CPL 245.50

For IT

Easy to deploy, quiet on the network.

  • Windows desktop app with signed .msi and .exe installers
  • Case records and private areas encrypted at rest, with a key protected by Windows
  • The case library refuses cloud-synced and network folders, and Remove moves a case aside instead of deleting it
  • Encrypted backups to a folder you choose (OneDrive is fine: the backup is ciphertext)
  • The app window blocks every outside request except, when you ask, your firm's own Bedrock. No telemetry
Security and privacy

Getting started

Three steps.

  1. 1

    Install it

A signed Windows installer. Your cases live in a library folder on this computer, encrypted.

  2. 2

    Upload discovery

Add each delivery as it arrives. Every file is indexed, hashed and reconciled against the COC.

  3. 3

    Confirm the facts

Confirm the dates that start the clocks. Deadlines and documents follow from what you've confirmed.

Questions

Asked often.

Does Indictra ever see client data?

No. Cases stay in an encrypted library on your computer. Backups are encrypted with your passphrase, which we never have and can't recover.

Will it calculate a deadline it isn't sure about?

No. If a trigger date isn't confirmed, the deadline says it needs confirmation. Every calculated date is labeled for attorney review.

Does exporting a document mark it served?

No. Nothing is filed, served, sent or disclosed by the app. You record service when it happens.

Is it for solo practitioners?

Yes. A license can cover a whole firm or a single attorney, and a solo practice is a firm of one.

On the other side of the case? Prosecutor's Toolbox is built for district attorney's offices.
